A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

|
Summer is here and while much of the nation suffers the adverse effects of rising gas prices, stock market downturns and other economic woes, El Segundo is in better financial shape than ever. According to mid-year projections, our 2007/08 fiscal budget will finish well ahead of revenue estimates and considerably below expected expenditures. How do we explain the good news? Among other things, our favorable location, economic diversity and strong pro-business environment continue to drive our own prospects as well as foster those of our thriving tenants.
Our city remains a prime destination for business travelers and hotel occupancy is up to its highest levels since before 9/11. El Segundo is also a destination for business, period. More and more companies--regional and international alike--are flocking to El Segundo to take advantage of the many amenities offered by the county's first Eddy-award winner as "most business friendly city."
We pride ourselves as being "The City That Invests in You," and we haven't done too badly with our own investments. El Segundo's reserves are sufficient to sustain the city through any extended period of economic downturn.
While we're in great shape, we're also keeping an eye on the future, shoring up funds to ensure that expected state cuts impact us as minimally as possible so we can continue to provide superior services to residents and businesses.
Several upcoming projects should help the cause, including the modernization of the El Segundo Generating Station that will provide much-needed electrical power for the regional grid and a steady revenue stream for our city in the future.
Thomas Properties Group will soon begin construction on a six-story office building at the 46-acre Campus El Segundo, while Pacsan Management Group is breaking ground on the largest mixed-use office complex ever west of Sepulveda Boulevard. Both of these projects are prime examples of high-caliber Class A space available here. With development overgrown and overpriced in so many cities, El Segundo is an ideal option for relocating as well as start-up companies.
And last but not least, Plaza El Segundo, the South Bay's most exciting new retail complex, has exceeded expectations and has turned El Segundo into a prime shopping destination.
Meanwhile, please keep our city in mind if your firm is looking for a new destination of its own. We really are "the city that invests in you." Our capable staff will quickly help acclimate you to our community. You can also learn more about us by logging onto: http://www.elsegundobusiness.com

Mayor Kelly McDowell

FRANK GEHRY HAS DESIGNS ON EL SEGUNDO

|
Internationally renowned architectural icon Frank Gehry has chosen El Segundo as the site of his future world headquarters. The man responsible for designing the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain among other notable projects is expected to occupy the new 60,000 square foot space by early 2009 along with some 250 employees.
Gehry's arrival continues a trend that has seen several prominent design, arts and media companies migrate to El Segundo in recent years. In 2007, advertising agencies Ignited Minds, LLC and David & Goliath moved to El Segundo, as did Internet media firm Tandberg Television.

EL SEGUNDO TAKES LEAD ROLE IN AIRPORT SAFETY

|
El Segundo has partnered with Inglewood in offering a proposal to implement critical safety upgrades to the north side of Los Angeles International Airport while causing no new adverse noise or other impacts on neighboring communities.
The plan mirrors the recently completed $333 million South Airfield Improvement Project, which included a new two-mile long, 75 foot wide centerline taxiway between the two southern runways that significantly reduces the chances of runway incursions by aircraft.
El Segundo's 2006 legal settlement with LAX paved the way for the south side improvements to become reality and the City has become a lead agency in the quest to maximize safety at the world's fifth largest airport.
|
CITY HOSTS ENVIRONMENTAL EXPO

|
El Segundo has also taken the lead in promoting environmental responsibility both locally and regionally. As part of the process, the City hosted its first annual Environmental Expo on July 3 providing residents and business owners with information on how to reduce carbon footprint and save money in the process.
The event featured a variety of vendors showcasing eco-friendly products and services as well as interactive demonstrations on how to reduce energy and water use.
Among El Segundo's green projects are new LED traffic signals in the downtown district and the soon-to-be-constructed LEED-certified Fire Station 2. The City has also formed an Environmental Committee, consisting of representatives from government, business and the local community, to study future projects and make recommendations to the El Segundo City Council that prioritize green practices from this point forward.
